Green school in Lincoln, MA with sustainable building featuresHere are a few features of a green school constructed with sustainable building elements:

1.  Wall, floor and ceiling framing methods and insulation is upgraded with Greenguard and rigid insulation, ‘green sheathing” and vapor barrier is used for a superior building envelope free of unwanted air movement – air tight and ventilated right.

2.  HVAC systems sized properly and offer the latest in energy efficiency ratings.  Ventilation, temperature and humidity sensors, heat recovery units and occupancy sensors reduce the expense of mechanical systems that draw the bulk of the power demand.

3.  Proper placement and sizing of windows and skylights for optimum daylighting and energy-efficient lighting systems with occupancy sensors, reduces the need for artificial light and improves the sensory environment. E.g. Interior light shelves deliver sunlight across the room,  exterior sun shades can be hinged for appropriate adjustment given the season.

4. Construction with rapidly renewable and high recycled content materials,  e.g. recycled content carpet tiles,  MDF interior wall board, Bamboo Chair rails,  and recycled steel for a structure that is strong and also far more moisture resistant than wood.

5. Low VOC paints, adhesives and coatings, formaldehyde-free materials that reduce indoor air pollution.

6.  Automatic sink faucets, low flow or no water toilets and urinals, other water reduction methods can be added, including rain water catch and storage capabilities.

7.  Factory-built modular is inherently low waste and reduced embodied energy e.g. fewer job site environmental impacts, fewer material deliveries, controlled conditions for weather, reductions in dust and noise and water pollution.

8. White roofing that reflects solar heat, reducing the need for energy-costly air conditioning.

9. Ease of Re-Use.  The greenest practice of all is to re use existing built structures.  Because some manufactures schools are capable of de construction and re location – they can be 100% reused.

10. Teaching Tool.   The classroom is a place where students should learn about sustainability.   Healthy Green Schools enable us to educate future generations about the importance of eco –friendly school construction.

To what extent are modular/prefabricated buildings more environmentally friendly than traditional builds?…

I can only speak for the benefits of a green modular classroom space, but they really apply to any type of prefab buildings. * Prefab structures should be designed with the most forward HVAC (heating, ventalation, air condition) technology to reduce en…
