Lunch and Learn – An Opportunity for Informal Education While Eating
I recently had the opportunity to host a lunch and learn event at Symmes Maini & McKee Associates in Cambridge. SMMA is an integrated design firm offering architecture, engineering, interior design and planning services. In 2012, they were ranked 4 by BBJ in the list of largest architectural firms.
Educate vs. Sell
As a sales and marketing professional I approach lunch and learns with mixed emotion. I am fortunate enough to work for a company “selling” a product I not only believe in but am also passionate about. I am excited to talk about modular construction. There is a fine line dividing informing and selling. But sharing knowledge and expertise is the goal in this setting.
Engaging the Audience
In the past, I have had the unfortunate experience of presenting to audiences made up of glossed over eyes, occasionally glancing toward their watches or iphones. Not SMMA! Not only did they engage but I was met with my favorite L&L circumstance. There was a woman in the audience who had experience working on a modular project. She had lessons learned to share with her peers. Several times as I was highlighting best practices for a successful modular construction project, the advice resonated with her. A dream comes true.
Why or Why Not
Lunch and learns are typically voluntary. However many companies rely on them as an in-house learning program. It can be an opportunity to learn about a technology or product you may otherwise not be exposed to. Does your company’s culture allow you to pass or such an opportunity? Or will there be repercussions upon if you politely defer? Keep in mind many times lunch and
learns, including the ones I host, provide a free lunch!

Hi Janet,
I would like to speak more about a possible lunch n learn session here in our office in San Antonio. The work you all are doing seems exemplary and is very collaborative in its mission. Would you be interested in sharing this knowledge with us here in San Antonio Texas?
Please let me know the next steps for this.
Thanks

Hello Hozefa- Thank you for reading the blog! I hope you subscribe. I would love to do a Lunch and learn for you, unfortunately we do not travel outside of New England due to the regional nature of our company. I can do 1 of 2 things. I can help you find someone in your area who can provide you with more information about modular or I can offer to give an online presentation. Please feel free to contact me at jfield@triumphmodular.com if you are interested in either one of those option. Best Regards, Janet
