Modular Classroom Space for Needham Mitchell Elementary School
This 7,800 square foot modular swing space was built to support students and faculty at Needham Mitchell Elementary School during ongoing campus improvements. Designed to maximize usable program space on a restricted site, the modular building includes four classrooms, four bathrooms, and additional storage areas. It was installed where the former basketball courts stood — with a new court constructed behind the building to preserve outdoor play space.
The modular classroom addition consists of 10 factory-built modules and was customized for younger students, with vibrant colors, durable finishes, and expansive windows that bring in natural light. Corrugated steel siding on the exterior offers a durable and contemporary look that blends well with the campus setting.
This project met the Massachusetts “Stretch” Energy Code, requiring advanced building performance and energy efficiency. Systems include daylight harvesting lighting controls, layered insulation using batt, rigid board, and spray foam, and a high-efficiency HVAC setup. Operable windows and ceiling fans support natural ventilation and indoor air quality. The swing space solution offered both speed and sustainability — minimizing disruption while delivering a high-performance modular building on time and on budget.
